Indy Council Needs to Lead on the Environment

Candidate John Barth proposes standing committee to oversee Indianapolis environmental and related proposals

INDIANAPOLIS – John Barth, candidate for City/Council District 7 and former Council Vice President, today unveiled a proposed ordinance to create a standing “Environment Committee.” He said the committee is needed to provide leadership and oversight of the City’s environment and natural resources.

 “Clean air, water, and soil should not be luxuries – every Indianapolis citizen should expect a clean environment,” said Barth. “Establishing an Environment Committee is an important step toward achieving a sustainable infrastructure to ensure we protect our natural assets for future generations and for improved quality of life today.”

 The committee’s charge will be to:

  • Ensure the Thrive Indianapolis Plan, meant to make our city more resilient in the face of climate threats, has the Council support needed to achieve its goals;

  • Work to achieve environmental equity;

  • Promote more open spaces and methods to pay for them;

  • Enhance recycling options;

  • Ensure city supported investments promote environmental responsibility.

Barth’s proposal establishing the committee has been drafted and, if elected, he will introduce it the first day of Council business in 2020.
